Outdoor Spaces for Introverts

The doormat might read “Hey Y’all” but outdoor spaces at your home should be geared towards you and your wants, not the the occasional outdoor dinner party (weather permitting!). Below you’ll find some inspiration for cozy spots for outdoor book binging, as well as our favorite places to shop for cozy essentials.

Want to make a reading or meditation oasis? Try a strong statement piece, like a rocking chair or large basket chair (we love this one from Target). Pairing it with a large plant and a lantern makes for a more private feel. If a large plant isn’t wallet-friendly right now, try a small side table with a few mini succulents (The Sill has adorable “Minis” at affordable prices). Bonus: Succulents are pretty much impossible to kill — trust us! If you want to give your outdoor nook an extra touch of cozy comfort, add a lantern (there are plenty of options for under $20 at World Market) or several!

Just because your outdoor space is small (or has a view of a parking lot) doesn’t mean you can’t turn it into a relaxing retreat. All lanterns pictured here are from Homegoods.

If you are fortunate enough to have a little more space, consider adding a dining area. While it’s charming to dine al fresco, this area can also serve as an outdoor work space, too (especially if you’re #WFH right now!). Comfort is key, so make sure that your outdoor space is as cushy as where you would work inside. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself running back inside at the first since of a stiff neck.

Here at Gander & Co., we’re based in South Florida, so we opted for bright colors and the very necessary patio umbrella (not today, sunburn!). But maybe your outdoor retreat is a bit chillier. No worries. Considering adding a small space heater or fuzzy blankets so that you can enjoy your space even when the thermometer drops below a scorching 80 degrees.

Last but certainly not least, if you are planning on using your space at night — and why wouldn’t you — make sure to add sufficient lighting for late night reading, tea drinking, or catching up with a close friend. String lights — especially LED and solar options — are fab for outdoor spaces, but lanterns, candles, and ground lighting can work well, too!
